Description
Leaders of social and solidarity economy organisations are faced with the issue of their departure, whether this involves retirement, a voluntary business transfer or a restructuring of governance. These departures raise a question that has been studied very little to date: how can succession be ensured in social enterprises (employer associations, SCICs, SCOPs, hybrid structures) where the issue is not the transfer of assets, but the transfer of leadership, mission and collective governance? This doctoral project aims to understand and theorise the mechanisms of transfer and takeover specific to social enterprises, drawing on four social enterprises to which access has been arranged: three large-scale social enterprises based in different regions, and a national network of over 600 organisations. These sites provide empirical data at different stages of the transfer process (under consideration, in progress, or completed).
